Basra Chamber of Commerce (BCC) is a professional economic organization that enjoys judicial character, as well as financial and administrative independence. It was established in 1906, but its emergence as a clearly-defined organization came about only after the birth of the independent Iraqi State and the promulgation of Law No. 40 (in 1926) establishing Iraq’s three chambers of commerce (Baghdad, Basra and Mosul) and, subsequently, other chambers.

The BCC was incorporated in the Iraqi Federation of Industries by virtue of Law No. 24 (in 1982). It continued to be part of the Federation until the promulgation of Laws No. 43 and 44 (also in 1982), which established the Federation of Iraqi Chambers of Commerce and the Federation of Iraqi Chambers of Industry. This led to the emergence of the BCC’s new administrative body, consisting entirely of the chamber’s merchant members.
